Jump Start

Jump Start Child Development Center

The YMCA Jump Start Child Care is a full service center for teen parents and their children. We provide a safe, caring and positive environment for children 6 weeks to 4 years old, offering support to strengthen the family unit.  This program is for children whose parents are currently enrolled and attending classes through the Rapid City Area Schools District.

The most important people in a child’s life are their parents. When parents are bettering their lives, they are helping their child to a better life.

Our caring and qualified staff serve as role models to both parents and children. We are more than just a babysitting service. Our goal is to help parents and their children develop physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally to their fullest potential. We provide a support network for teen parents.

This program exists to help students with children finish high school. Because we support parents attending school, we are open Monday-Friday from 7:30am-4:00pm on the days that the Rapid City School District is in session.

We also follow the school district’s early dismissal and late start schedules.

The YMCA Jump Start program is for high school aged parents currently attending classes at Central, Stevens and Rapid City High School (including GED program). The program does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex of the child or the marital status, or age of the parent.

Our program is offered free-of-charge to parents provided the following requirements are met:

1. Parents must be enrolled and attending classes in the Rapid City School District.

2. Parents must provide Jump Start staff proof that each child’s immunizations are current.   Babies may start our program at 6 weeks but parents must bring shot records as soon as they are given to the baby.

3. Parents must volunteer one hour in the child care center for each day their child is at the center.

4. Parents must attend one YMCA enrichment class each month.

Life Skills

Jump Start Child Development Center located at Rapid City High School provides:

1. Child care. Our experienced and trained staff lovingly and skillfully care for the children while their parents attend classes. At the end of each school day, parents receive a note detailing the child’s day including sleep, eating, etc.

2. Training. Based upon the needs of the high school parents currently enrolled, information and hands-on experiences are provided to parents during monthly enrichment classes. Professional guest speakers coach parents on topics such as nutrition, community resources, age-appropriate educational play for children, identifying children’s need for medical care, etc.

3. Mentoring. The Jump Start staff is always available to individually answer parents’ questions concerning all phases of child care and development.

4. Opportunity. An educational mentor is available to assist student-parents in setting goals that will not only help them complete high school but also plan their education and careers beyond high school.
