Roger began his career with the YMCA of Rapid City as a college work-study student in 1976. After four years of leading afterschool programs, driving a bus, mopping floors and just about every other position in the YMCA, along with obtaining a BS degree from the SD School of Mines, Roger was hired as the youth outreach director. Having launched multiple new youth programs, Roger then moved into the senior program director position in 1988 where he instituted several new organizational practices and programs. In 1992 Roger was hired by the YMCA Board as the executive director. Since then the YMCA has grown more than five times its size and has expanded its reach throughout Rapid City and the southern Black Hills. Known by YMCA staff and generations of children as Captain Mustache, Roger continues to carry on his lengthy career with a passion for changing lives for the better spiritually, mentally and physically. (The mustache was shaved in 2014 in a challenge with staff for the annual campaign.) Roger and his wife, Eileen, have three married daughters and seven grandchildren.

Sandy, chief operations officer, has been with the YMCA of Rapid City for over 30 years while serving as COO for over 14 of these years. Her first position included working with Sundowners after school child care, swimming lessons and picking up lunch for everyone every day. Sandy currently oversees all program development, evaluations and staffing for our Aquatics, Child Care, Afterschool, Member Services, Wellness, Sports and Outreach Departments. Sandy has Y-USA Trainer Certifications in Working with Children Up to Age 5, Early Care & Learning, and School-Age Child Care. She also has certifications and/or completed coursework in over a dozen areas related to programming for youth. A fan of Charles Schulz's Lucy, she'll share advice for 2¢. Sandy considers herself an "almost Rapid City" native who loves Halloween and sports cars. She and her husband Randy are Green Bay Packers fans and both enjoy golf. Sandy loves to laugh. If you want to share a laugh with her ask her to tell you the story about the broken down bus and the motorcycle ride.

Keiz joined the Y staff in 2016 as chief development officer. Her position has three areas of focus: developing financial resources, overseeing Y communications and fostering positive community relations. Keiz’s educational background includes a B.A. in Psychology, a B.S. in Math, as well as graduate degrees in Secondary Education and Educational Administration. She describes herself as a high achiever who loves to see a team of people come together to make things better in this world. Living in Europe is on her bucket list where she and Tony would like to do more bicycling. In addition to biking, Keiz enjoys skiing and reading. One of her favorite volunteer activities is with Ski for Light helping people with disabilities enjoy the outdoors. With her two children grown and out of the house, they have time to take adventures. When she’s not working, Keiz said she’s doing something active. Not many people may know that she’s gone sky-diving and really enjoyed it. “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience,” expressed by Eleanor Roosevelt is the quote Keiz says best describes her.

I have been at this Y since 2013. I enjoy the variety that the Y offers and doing my part in support of a worthy mission. I began working with the YMCA in Williamsport, PA, as building & grounds director in 2009. After attending the college of agricultural engineering at Penn State University I worked in various fields in the construction industry from residential contracting to HVAC design & estimating. My wife and I have been married since 1990 and have 12 energetic kids, several who have also worked here at the Y. My family all enjoy taking part in the classes and other activities offered here. We relocated to the area in June of 2013 and have enjoyed the transition to becoming South Dakotans.

Southern Hills Branch Officer


Rex has served as the director of the YMCA in Custer since August 2008. Rex has a combined 25 years of experience working for YMCA’s in South Dakota, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska and has held director positions in youth sports, day and resident camping, aquatics, childcare, facility management, wellness and as an executive director. His hometown is Irene, SD. Rex has a bachelor and a master degree in Physical Education.

If you haven't had the opportunity to meet Chris in the Randy Travis Wellness Center, make some time. His passion for helping others and the commitment to what the Y represents in bringing the community together will inspire you. Chris joined the YMCA staff in March of 2018. He is originally from Fort Collins, CO. "The Y lets me utilize my professional skills and I love to be a part of something that my family can be a part of," said Chris. Chris's wife, Sarah, and their two boys, Owen and Leo, love to be a part of the YMCA community. Chris wants all YMCA members to know that he is open to any questions and about nutrition, fitness, weightlifting and leading a healthy lifestyle!

Amanda began employment with the YMCA in 2012 as Kidstop Coordinator. After serving as interim director, she became director of the Edgemont YMCA in 2016. Her responsibilities include development, promotion organization, supervision and evaluation of all Edgemont Y programs. Amanda is passionate about seeing children have fun, learn and grow in a great environment at the Y. She works to provide a safe out-of-school-time program, plans curriculum and maintains positive relationships with students, parents, and school staff. She and her husband, Chris, have two children. If she’s not working she can be found at the library, the lake or at home. Amanda enjoys painting, home projects, basketball and reading – anything by David Bell and sci-fi. She said her favorite way to spend a weekend is playing board games with her kids, reading, fishing or playing outside. What is always found on her desk? Coffee

Family Services Director


Our Family Services Director is Alisa Cunningham, more often known as “Ace” to all the summer campers/staff. In this position, Alisa oversees the school-age programs, summer camp programs, transportation and Leaders Club. She has served as director since 2007. Alisa began her Y career as a front desk volunteer in 2001. Alisa said she is excited about the opportunities at the Y to expose children to all the wonderful things outdoors at camp and building lifetime relationships. Her educational background is in psychology and criminal justice. Alisa describes herself as very quirky and having a very good sense of humor when needed. She enjoys watching football and basketball and spending time with her family. She and Jim have three adult children and “Duke,” their dog. What can always be found on her desk? “Lots and lots of paper.”

Bryan began as the communications director for the Y in January of 2012. With over twelve years of experience in marketing, communications, graphic design and photography, Bryan is building the framework on which we tell our great story. Bryan began his career in design and marketing after earning his degree in Photography and New Media from the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, MO, in 2002. As a South Dakota native, he understands the community that we embrace and the challenges at hand. He strives to bring our communication efforts to the next level. His work can be found all around the YMCA from the local TV and radio spots to the pages of this website. As a professional photographer and artist, Bryan works alongside the YMCA’s Youth Institute program to teach his skills and professionalism to high school students with their eye on a career in the arts.

Twila Meyers

Early Childhood Director


Twila has literally seen thousands of kids grow up at the Y since her first job in 1992 as AM Kidstop Coordinator and Sundowner staff. She assumed her current position as Early Childhood Director in 2015 and describes her role as educating, supporting and inspiring child care professionals in their work with young children. She said she is passionate about making a difference in people’s lives so it will in turn change the world. With a B.S. in Elementary Education she also has classroom teaching experience. Her hometown is Newell, SD, however, she prefers Maui as a vacation destination. Her bucket list includes visiting Australia and Israel. While Twila said she enjoys relaxing at the home she shares with her husband, Kevin, and a cat, she is also quite creative in card making and scrapbooking. Some of her favorite things include Karen Kingsbury books, the movie Edward Scissorhands and the TV show Hawaii Five-O. Twila said, “I’m continually striving to be the best version of me I can be!”

Aquatics Director


Frances was a YMCA lifeguard/swim instructor from 1983-1986. In 1993 she re-joined the YMCA as a volunteer swim instructor, while working full time and finishing her college degree at Western Dakota Tech. In April 1998, she was hired as the aquatic director. Frances’ 30+ years of aquatic experience, her Lifeguard Trainer Certifications (for 2 Organizations), her EMT Certification, and certifications as a Trainer in CPR/First aide (for 3 National Organizations) enable her to lead the aquatic staff in their goal to change lives and be safe through prevention! Frances continues to help the Y movement on a national level as a YMCA of the USA Faculty Trainer in YMCA Lifeguarding, Y Swim Lessons and Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic Program. She and her husband, Karl, have two adult children, Naomi and Theo, who have both grown up in the Y and have both been YMCA volunteers and staff members.

Associate Early Childhood Director


Nicole has moved from the Custer Y Childcare program to the Rapid City YMCA as the Associate Early Childhood Director. Nicole began her Y career as a preschool teacher in 2005. Since 2011 as the Child Development Director, Nicole oversees the child care center, afterschool programs in Custer and Hermosa and summer day camps in Custer and Hermosa. Her educational credentials include Child Development Associate, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Certification, Youth Mental Health First Aid Certification and countless hours and certifications in child development. Nicole is an involved member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, South Dakota School Age Care Alliance and Zonta. Nicole is passionate about raising the bar in childcare through quality programs with highly trained, well supported teachers. “I have learned that I still have a lot to learn” (Maya Angelou) is the quote she said best describes herself. She enjoys watching sports, especially when her children are playing, and 4-wheeling. Nicole’s hometown is Rewey, WI. She and her husband Thad have three children. What can you always find on her desk? Diet Coke and essential oil.

Group Exercise Coordinator


Nicole has been employed in the YMCA Wellness Department since 2002 and has served us as wellness director since 2008. Her leadership in this position resulted in the successful implementation of staff training in Understanding Health Seekers and Listen First training; Listen First reinforcement strategies, the Environmental Assessment and follow-up adaptations, Program Innovation techniques and Member-Driven Data. Nicole is a YMCA of the USA volunteer trainer for Healthy Lifestyles, Group Exercise Instructor, Cardio and Step, and Listen First. In addition to YMCA of the USA certification in Personal Training, Sports Conditioning, Pilates, Kickboxing and AFYAP, Nicole is certified in Yoga Fit and as an APAI Water Instructor/Trainer. Nicole’s leadership is known throughout the Rapid City community, as the Rapid City Journal named Nicole as one of the “Eight of 2008”to watch for in making a long term impact on the Rapid City community due to Nicole’s commitment to helping individuals improve their health. She is awesome. You'll often find Nicole running. She runs four or five marathons a year, but her favorite distance is a half marathon. She and her husband, Todd, have adult children. She and Todd enjoy power lifting and kittens. She also enjoys cooking.
