Be a Lifeguard

American Red Cross Lifeguard/Waterpark/AED/O2 certification.

All of  our Lifeguard courses are taught in the Blended Learning format, which means that students will have online work they MUST complete before each class.    After registration, student must contact frances@rcymca.org to receive course book and materials—the sooner the  email is received the sooner the studying can start!

To receive certification  you are required to: Complete all on-line Lessons + Attend all class times +   Pass  written tests  with an 80% + Complete water skills and CPR practical tests  (hands-on)

Pre—course Swim REQUIREMENTS

YOU MUST BE 15 YEARS OLD by the last day of class to take the course

- 300 yards of continuous swimming using front crawl (with rhythmic breathing) and /or breast-stroke goggles are allowed for this segment. No swimming on back or side for this skill segment.

- Tread water, legs only, for 2 mins - without support or stopping. Candidate should have hands under armpits and head must remain above surface of the water (ears out).

- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breast stroke (head above or below water), surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point and exit the water without using the a ladder or steps. During the swim back, you must have your face above the water, both hands on the brick, and the brick on your chest. You have 1 minute and 40 seconds for this skill and goggles are NOT allowed

We are proud to offer the American Red Cross Lifeguard/Waterpark Course (including CPR, AED, Oxygen and First Aid certifications). 

Participants must be 15-years-old by the last day of the course.

American Red Cross Lifeguard/Waterpark/Oxygen Review Course

This class is specifically for those who are currently certified (or those whose certification has not been expired longer than 30 days). This course has online course work required to be complete before the first class.  Student will be required to perform all pre-required skills tests (listed above with the full lifeguard course) 

To register for a review course please send an email to frances@rcymca.org, that email needs to include: 

  1. which date (option you would like to attend)
  2. your name
  3. address
  4. phone number
  5. date of birth, and
  6. a copy of your lifeguard certification.

Course fee
Member: $150  Program Participant: $175 (returning students save $25)

Wednesday, 5/29/19, 1-8pm – register early, class size is limited  (registration deadline 5/24)
Thursday, 6/6/19, 10am-4pm & 6-9pm.  register early, class size is limited  (registration deadline 5/31)
