Cycle Classes

Participating in a YMCA Cycle Class can burn on average 500 calories. Cycling can be performed as an anaerobic exercise, pulling energy from reserves and building up muscular endurance over an extended period of time. However, there are also aerobic benefits. Our Cycle Classes include both endurance and cardiovascular training. Heart health is an obvious benefit, as is lung capacity. As we work harder we will learn to work on controlled breathing, as well.

If you prefer to pedal a little slower you won’t fall behind the rest of the class, and you won’t feel out of place for not knowing a routine. No one knows what level anyone else is working at, and they are free to progress at their own pace.

Cycling keeps the pressure off your knees and feet. You are able to work out hard on a bike without hurting your knees and feet. It is also a good workout for those who cannot use the treadmill or elliptical because of arthritis. With limited bikes, please contact membership services to reserve a bike for your preferred class.

Strength & Balance is a community-based senior fitness program that will help you become more active, energized and empowered for independent living. While the program is especially beneficial for older adults living with arthritis, we serve all fitness levels. On average, participants with a regular attendance of at least 75% of classes showed improved health benefits. During a class, you will enjoy a full hour of fun, focusing on dynamic cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance, and flexibility - everything older adults need to maintain health and function well as they age. You will experience improved physical and social functioning, decreased depression and isolation, and will likely have fewer hospital visits, which lowers health care costs. In addition to the physical support, we create an atmosphere that encourages social interaction, which is a vital part of mental well-being for everyone.  Sessions take place twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday) over 6 weeks. Each one-hour class is led by an instructor who focuses on cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance—everything older adults need to maintain health and function as they age. Instructors will conduct pre and post fitness assessments for each 6-week session. Can’t make the whole session? Drop in anytime.

Fitness Fusion

Located in the Custer YMCA Log Building Gymnasium

Fitness Fusion is a beginner group exercise class for members at the Custer YMCA.
It is an energetic, high intensity, no impact to low impact workout that is always changing.
High Intensity Low Impact Training (HILIT) is a style of high-intensity interval training that is focused on getting a person to muscle fatigue and/or a target heart rate. HILIT is a just a specific approach to HIIT that reduces the amount of impact involved on the joints during the workout.
A traditional high intensity style workout normally includes plyometric moves, which means the feet leave the floor.
People who have previous or recent joint injuries, back or joint pain or bone infusions may have trouble doing plyometric exercises without pain, discomfort or even risk of injury. HILIT gives you the benefits of the HIIT, but takes out the impact movements, making them safer for most people.
