My son played flag football for J. Mcknight and his team of awesome coaches. We can not get over how incredible these guys were. This is the best experience my son has had trying these extra activites. We are so grateful to the coaches and the program and can not value any more the positive influence on the kids. This has truly been a great experience.

I retired in May 2008 and came to the YMCA that October. After taking the Wellness 101 with YMCA trainer Ron, I began to work out in the Xpress Fitness room and soon transitioned to the Life Fitness circuit and to the pilates class with Barby Jo three times per week. Along with the YMCA work out, riding bike and eating healthier, I have lost 25 pounds. I now have added yoga classes to my YMCA routine and also volunteer in the wellness center.

My husband and I were at our heaviest weight and made the decision to make a change for ourselves and for our children. We decided to join the YMCA in October 2007 and it was one of the greatest decisions we have made. We have taught our kids about being healthy and staying active so that they will never have to go through the same weight problems that we have. The child watch nursery has enabled us to come and work out at the Y. We also have found that the YMCA staff are quite motivating.

Jamie Hermanson was hired in August 2003 as a lifeguard for the YMCA. Starting while in high school, Jamie worked through her college years at the YMCA until 2008. Jamie's experience included working at the Star Village Outreach Center. Jamie found that she really loved it and was drawn to the kids up there. Jamie came to see Frances, the Y's Aquatic Director, recently before heading to Spain for a 3 month Spanish course and told her that she was accepted into law school and will start in the fall. Frances asked her, "Why a Lawyer?" She answered by saying that she took a class in law as part of her degree in Business and that the class made her think about how she could contribute to society. Jamie said that working at Star Village played a big role in her dreams - it made her see a part of life that she never really knew existed in Rapid City, and this was just 15 minutes from her Rapid City home! The kids up there, their stories and their backgrounds gave Jamie a desire to go into family law.

My husband, Kevin, and I have been members of the Rapid City YMCA since 1997. It has been great seeing all of the changes to our local Y - from the addition of the Randy Travis Wellness Center and the Rapid City Gym to the classes that are offered for adults and children along with the Arts and Science Center. One of the "perks" that Kevin & I enjoy is using YMCA facilities in other cities when we travel. We have worked out at YMCA's in cities ranging from Norfolk, NE, St Louis, MO, Des Moines, IA, Denver, CO and Seattle, WA. Kind of like having a little piece of home when we travel - we are always treated very well when we present our Rapid City YMCA membership cards and feel very welcomed. It is interesting to see the different facilities, their layouts and equipment they have to offer. Keep this in mind when you are traveling - getting out and exercising keeps you going!!!

Mark Bratek is 63 years old and just retired last June from the US Forest Service. After being a couch potato for 20 years, January 4th, 2010 he joined the Y and started doing water aerobics. He started the Fitness 101 class on February 23, 2010. Since then his results have been remarkable. In less than 7 weeks his flexibility went from 16.5 to 25, his curl ups went form 25-37 and Sit ups 2 to 15. His blood pressure was 146/78 when he started and now its 118/63. He has lost 7 pounds since he started. The class has ended and he's continuing his journey in the weight room 3 days a week, walking and swimming.
