The First Tee, An Initiative of the World Golf Foundation

Sports fields and courts have always been a playing ground for teaching life lessons, both positive and negative. The First Tee Program believes they have not only found a way to teach positive life lessons, but also depends on an adherence to a series of Life Skills for its very existence. That teaching is through the game of golf.

The mission of The First Tee is 'To impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character-development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf'. The goal of The First Tee and The First Tee of Rapid City is to provide the golf learning facilities and the experience that will enable kids from every walk of life to partake of a game that teaches values for life and which can be played for a lifetime.

Program Descriptions - PLAYer
This program is the entry level point which teaches the students the 9 Core Values of The First Tee. They are also taught the Life Skills needed to transfer these Core Values to everyday activities, using golf lessons as the vehicle to teach the skills. These Life Skills are seamlessly integrated into our golf instruction. The PLAYer level Life Skills being taught are:

1. Welcome, Showing Respect, and Courtesy Towards Others
2. Responsibility for the Course and the Honesty of Players
3. Modeling Sportsmanship and Developing Confidence
4. Using Good Judgment and Playing with Perseverance
5. Living with Integrity

Program Descriptions - PAR
The second level of participation level is described as PAR. After graduating from the PLAYer level, students are taught a new set of Life Skills seamlessly integrated into the golf instruction. These new Life Skills build on the Character Enhancement values previously taught and encourage more participation in the program. The Par level Life Skills being taught are:

1. Welcome and Introductions Meeting and Greeting
2. Respecting the Rules
3. Having fun while you learn
4. Staying Cool in Pressure Situations
5. Finding Your Personal Par

Program Descriptions - BIRDIE
The third level of participation is described as BIRDIE. At this level, the student becomes more engaged with the process of setting goals. We practice understanding what the differences are between realistic attainable goals and setting your goals to a level that is not reachable. These goals are reinforced with practice on the golf course with instruction as well as building a goal ladder for each individual. The Life Skills practiced at this level are:

1. Dreams and goals / goal setting
2. Positively stating a goal that is important to you
3. Stating goals specifically
4. Setting goals that are under your control
5. Getting to your goal
6. Dealing with challenges
